Random Asks || ANONYMOUS
Well! Not to worry, dear anon! Your local baby trans brother is here to help as best as he can! Now, I want to begin with a …
[ s h o r t d i s c l a i m e r ] : there is no single way to write a trans character. This is because, just like cis characters, they’re all different. There’s so many ways to tell any character’s story, trans or cis or whatever else. I am also not an expert. Even if I am trans, I’ve ( probably ) only lived this one life and path. Therefore, I can’t speak for many other trans experiences. Still! I can offer advice and subtle criticisms from my own viewpoint!
Without further ado, here’s my take on writing trans characters:
>Disclaimer, But Longer
This is not the world’s best guide! I am not the world’s most trans person ( and that doesn’t even exist ); I am simply one single trans boy speaking from the perspective of such. I have done as much research as I had done before pertaining to this subject, have interacted with other trans people with differing experiences, but can’t speak on their behalf. With that in mind, I am still a somewhat valid source for criticism. If you ask me for my opinion on trans-based writing, I will gladly offer it but do remember that I am still young! I’m a baby boy, what can I say?
This guide also doesn’t include everything. There’s so much to say on being trans, in writing or in general, and writing the experience will always be a bit difficult if you haven’t lived it. Though, you should do research. Reading my guide will not be enough and I urge for you to reach out to other trans people; writers, or otherwise. Read other guides, do other research ( such as the effects of certain hormones ), and listen to criticism if you receive it. I highly suggest you ask a trans person if you’re unsure about something.
I am also a trans boy who’s very offset by the idea of generally being seen as female. My research on trans women is little / few and, though I’ve looked into it, my knowledge is not as extensive as my research on trans men! Please do your own looking up whenever you can; it’s important that you don’t only get your information from a fifteen year old trans boy about writing a thirty-something trans woman!!!
[ TL; DR, I should not be your only source and you should do your own research whilst listening to trans people if you get something wrong ]
>Common Terms
[ Deadname ] = A trans person’s unused given name. It’s called a dead name for a reason; they don’t use it. Some people have differing reactions to it- such as avoiding it, ignoring it, or responding to it on certain occasions- but is generally not used in many / most cases.
[ Transgender ] = An adjective used to describe someone who doesn’t align with their assigned gender. This includes nonbinary people. It can’t be used as a noun ( for example, ‘transgenders’ ) and is shortened to trans in most cases.
[ AGAB ] = Acronym for ‘Assigned Gender At Birth’ where Gender is replaced with Male or Female. For example, AFAB or AMAB.
[ Legal Name ] = The name that is on their legal documents. It may be their deadname, or it may be their current name; whichever one it is, it’s the one they’d have on certain documents ( school registrations, job applications, etc ) and can be changed.
[ Testosterone ] = Hormones that will change a feminine body into something more masculine, including hair growth, fat redistribution, and other bodily functions. It can be administered through a syringe, a gel / patches, or pills. Often shorted to T and used in terms such as T shot.
[ Estrogen ] = Hormones that will change a masculine body into something more feminine, including hair growth, fat redistribution, and other bodily functions. Often shortened to E.
[ Hormone Blockers ] = A medication used to block / stop / pause the effects of hormones in the body. This is typically used amongst younger trans people that are too young to take T or E.
[ Pre-Op ] = Refers to people who plan on getting operations done to change their sex; if someone were to want top surgery but haven’t had it yet, they’d be considered pre-op. Some trans people aren’t pre-op if they’d decided they don’t want to undergo a surgery.
[ Post-Op ] = Refers to people who have had their operations done. For example, metoidioplasty.
[ Gender Dysphoria ] = A term to describe general uncomfort in relation to someone’s gender and their body. Found typically prominent when it comes to hormones.
[ Gender Euphoria ] = A term to describe general joy in relation to someone’s gender and their body. Found typically prominent in use of certain pronouns or names.
[ HRT ] = Acronym for Hormone Reversal Treatment, which includes administering Testosterone or Estrogen into the body.
>Figuring Out They’re Trans
Every trans person figures out they’re trans differently; how long it takes them, when they do, and how they do will always be different. For me, I figured it out in my teens after doing my own research on the things I felt- I went to Google ( Or, well, Bing since I was in China at the time ) and looked up why I felt the way I did in my own body, resonated with terms I found, and did a lot of self reflection- and coming to the conclusion that I was trans. At the time, I labelled myself as nonbinary; some binary trans people have done this but not every. I didn’t feel like I fully identified with that, and yet felt detachment from my womanhood, which later lead me to finding out I was a trans boy all along. It fit me. That’s my path but, for your muse, maybe they figured it out differently.
Maybe they felt out of place in their own body since they were young, or maybe they simply didn’t fit with their given gender at birth. Or they could’ve not known all the way into adulthood, clicking with a term when it passes them by. Not every trans experience is the same! Whilst writing trans characters knowing since they were born is valid, it’s also valid to write them knowing ages later. I put off identifying as a man before, only because I feared that my boyfriend wouldn’t love me anymore. And now? Now I’m glad I came out! Writing characters doing something similar wouldn’t be a stretch!
How and when your character finds out will always be valid; they can find out while playing in a sandbox in their playground, or notice they didn’t feel attached to their gender assigned at birth. They can go to a therapist and be told their emotions lined up with being trans, or they could be reading a book and thinking I feel like that’s me to which they draw their conclusion. The possibilities are endless! I guarantee that there’s somebody out there that’s able to relate to it because there’s so many ways to figure it out; it can take a few minutes, or days, or weeks, or months, or years of thinking it over before IDing as trans- that’s the nature of it.
>The ‘First Steps’ In Transitioning and Coming Out
Some come out when they’re younger, some come out in their teens, some come out in adulthood, and some don’t come out at all. Coming out as trans is similar to coming out as gay, bi, etc. However, there’s the added thing with pronouns, names, and medical transitions ( if your character ever decides they want to ). It’s different in that sense, but not everything will be different. In most- if not all- cases, your character will have a pronoun change. They may go from he/him to they/them or be okay with he/him but prefer they/them without exclusion. Some may use multiple pronouns, or be exclusive to one set, or something of the sorts.
When changing their name, some people may choose one similar to their given one, or make a new one entirely, or look through a baby name book. They may switch from one name to another, or have multiple, or decide not to change at all for a variety of reasons; their given name can stick to being their name if they want it to! For me, I’ve always loved the pronunciation of ‘Chris’ but never felt right with the spelling, to which I fixed by spelling it as ‘Kriss’ instead. My deadname holds a lot of emotional and frankly traumatic weight to it, so I feel very uncomfortable when people say it or I see it anywhere. My body physically cringes at it and it doesn’t help that there’s someone in my class who shares it, so I never respond to it in class unless I know for sure whoever is using my deadname has no prior knowledge about my current one.
Transitioning is a choice; some decide to make it, whilst others don’t. It doesn’t invalidate them at all and the journey should never be the only distinct aspect to a character’s story. Them transitioning can be a main plot point but should never be the only thing that makes this character’s whole, well, character! Outside of it, they are still a character after all. Some decide to socially transition ( change their name, their clothing style, the way they interact with people in comparison to how they were prior to coming out ) whilst others decide to medically transition ( get top surgery, go on hrt ). It will always be different for certain people.
Reactions to coming out will vary, with differing factors of course; how did they come out, who to, when, etc. Some will react with open arms and others will outright abuse. It will be different from character to character, on the giving and receiving end, so think carefully about how to write this. I haven’t come out to my parents, given that they’re very transphobic and my entire country offers very hefty punishment for being LGBT+ in general. My classmates and friends? They know; I came out, in varying ways at varying times, and have received a plethora of reactions ranging from acceptance to denial.
>Medically Transitioning
Not all trans people decide to undergo medical transition, for many reasons. They may be ill and aren’t physically strong to take hormones or have surgery, maybe they have monetary issues, or they simply don’t want to. All of these reasons are valid and don’t make the trans person any less trans at all.
This typically includes surgery and hormones, though there’s so much to say on that. Whilst some would choose both, others may choose one over the other; the most common is taking hormones and also getting one surgery. An example is me; I want to take Testosterone in the future as well as both top and bottom surgery. I have decided on which kind I want and will discuss with my future doctor about this. Other people may choose not to have top surgery, or bottom, or even hormones. Whatever your character chooses, it will not be the forefront of their personality.
Hormones can take a while to kick into effect; do your research about it. Recovery from certain procedures vary and you should do your research.
>Do’s And Don’ts
Make your trans character unique! Not everyone has the same lucky ‘I knew since birth, have been accepted everywhere, transitioned into something I wanted’ story, but not everyone has the same distraught ‘I knew ‘too late’, I’ve been bullied and disowned, and my transition failed / didn’t turn out the way I wanted’ ( and there’s no such thing as too late anyways ). Whilst they’re not impossible, they’re not the only paths; try a mix! Some people accept, some people don’t, and some people transition whilst others don’t; there’s never a straight and narrow path.
Do talk to other trans people about your character, and ask questions whenever you feel that you have a question. If the person is willing to answer, great! If not, be polite and go somewhere else for answers. Use multiple sources, do your research, and don’t ever assume. Do use your character’s name and refer to them using the pronouns they refer to themselves as; an exception is given when it comes to legal documents and transphobic characters speaking to them but you should never refer to a trans person who exclusively uses he/him with she/her. Don’t use their deadname when referring to them in their story, especially when you can use their actual name.
Never. EVER EVER EVER use their coming out as a ‘he was a she all along!’ trope. One of the worst things to do to a trans person is to misgender them; it’s disrespectful. Being called by their preferred name and pronouns is not a privilege and is a right; again, there’s an exception when certain characters are doing it, but the author shouldn’t use it as a chance to misgender their character. I won’t go into this much more because it’s hard for me to explain but, in general, a trans man is not the same as a cis woman and vice versa.
AGAIN, PLEASE REMEMBER THAT I AM NOT THE BEST SOURCE! PLEASE GO AND DO OTHER RESEARCH ON TOP OF THIS!! Thanks for reading!!!!

A Review on Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
Note: This review is not mine.I have posted this review here because I feel it summarizes the anime Code Geass very well.
However I will be posting my reviews in the future once I get more experience.
This review is taken myanimelist from the reviewer kiriska.
Overall Rating 9
I was incredibly skeptical about Code Geass at first, but I'm very pleased to say that I was greatly surprised.
STORY - Before I saw this series, it was described to me on multiple occasions as "Death Note with mechas." After seeing it, however, I am inclined to disagree. The similarities between the two series are superficial at best, and though I can see why people would draw the comparison, I don't really think that dis/liking one means that you'll dis/like the other. But anyway, unlike Death Note, I wouldn't say that the story in Code Geass is particularly notable or unique. It's actually rather straightforward and even a little cliche, but that's exactly why this is such a well done series -- the barebones storyline is handled in a refreshing and new way that grabs the viewer's attention. There are enough twists and turns involved to keep you on the edge of your seat. The pacing is excellent and nothing feels rushed or drawn out. Indeed, the progression up to the conclusion is especially brilliant. (It's a cliffhanger "ending," but oh, it's just a fantastic cliffhanger.)
The series is also appealing in its uncanny ability to mix genres. Yes, this is a mecha series, but it really doesn't have to be. Yes, CLAMP did the character designs and there are some very shoujo elements (read: homolust), but there are very shounen rivalries and some pretty epic battle scenes too. Everybody wins! Additionally, because of the number of characters, the story allows for a number of small subplots. I was very happy with how this was handled in particular because all of the subplots relate and affect the main plot directly, whether by revealing some bit of information to both the characters and the viewer or by pushing forward interesting character development. Everything is well thought out and wonderfully executed, so despite the fact that "strong-willed person with plans to change the world receives mysterious power that helps facilitate his goals" isn't a very unique storyline... Code Geass makes it work.
Also. Code Geass utilizes the "best friends trying to kill each other" plotline, and I'm a sucker for that plotline.
CHARACTER - The characters in this series are rather varied. Some are very plain and one-dimensional, while others have an amazing complexity to them that makes them very life-like. I'll be honest. I've become somewhat infatuated with Lelouch as a character (and am rather biased as a result). To me, he is very much a human character -- he has emotions, opinions, a unique point of view, and some very serious flaws, all of which make him incredibly easy to relate to and to sympathize with. He is easily the most complex character in the series, and he feels real to me, even with his supernatural powers and his genius-level intellect. This ability to make the audience relate to him is also probably the series' greatest strength and the main reason why the story is able to remain relevant and interesting despite the fact that there aren't too many new ideas plotwise.
Suzaku would probably be second in line for complexity after Lelouch, though his sense of justice might be called cliche at first (along with Nunnally's and Euphemia's), and his hax-level physical prowess is somehow harder to accept than Lelouch's genius-level intelligence. It's harder to appreciate Suzaku's depth at first, partially because he is presented as Lelouch's main obstacle and the audience's sympathies are with Lelouch, but a great deal is revealed about his character throughout the course of the series, and he becomes an amazing foil to his rival. Their conflicting ideologies and philosophies are fascinating if you really look into it, and gay as it sounds, they really do compliment each other very well.
Much of the rest of the cast seems to fall into typical archetypes -- there's your adorable little sister, your mad scientist and his assistant, your cheerful schoolgirls, your best friend, your most loyal soldier, your second-in-command, your village idiot, your... really creepy lesbian girl? Despite the generic-sounding descriptions, most of the characters are actually pretty fun, or at the very least, interesting. C.C. provides snarky commentary. Shirley spreads innocent schoolgirl love. Nunnally is so moe you'll die. Jeremiah is a good butt of all jokes. Little bits of backstory are tossed in here and there to separate them from the crowd, but it's never enough to actually intrude, and the wide range of characters lets you settle into the world pretty well too; after all, what universe is complete without an animal mascot that shows up now and again?
ARTWORK & ANIMATION - I wasn't too impressed with CLAMP's character designs at first (noodleboys!), but as always seems to be the case, they gradually grew on me, and I remembered just how pretty X was. CLAMP just knows how to make everyone look amazingly sexy, male or female. I really loved how they did all of the facial expressions in the series though, especially for Lelouch. Seriously, that guy had some of the most awesome crazy expressions, some of the most amazingly touching sadface expressions, and of course, some of the most amusing WTF expressions. The mecha designs for the Knightmare Frames were also pretty awesome. I dig the whole rollar blade thing, and some of the technologies they come up with are neat, if a little over-the-top. The animation is fluid and smooth for the most part and very few things stood out as being bad.
MUSIC - Initially, I wasn't particularly fond of any of the OP/EDs for Code Geass except the first ending by ALI PROJECT because 1) they're awesome, and 2) Yuki Kajiura's style seemed to suit the series very well. The screaming violins both convey the high status of Britannia and the intensity of the emotions in the series. The rest of the themes seemed lackluster in comparison, but though I was never a huge fan of FLOW, "COLORS" kind of grew on me after a while. The final insert song, "Innocent Days" by Hitomi is pretty nice as well. Very thoughtful, very poignant, very fitting. The background music during the series was negligible for the most part; there is some pretty generic battle build-up type music and other appropriate, but rather typical, themes. Still, there's some neat classical/opera stuff, and the "All hail Brittania!" theme is definitely awesome.
VOICE ACTING - I've seen all of Code Geass subbed and most of it dubbed. Although I was incredibly turned off by Johnny Yong Bosch's role as Lelouch initially, it kind of grew on me, and now I think it fits well enough, though I do wish he'd change his voice a little more when Lelouch is Zero (make it a little deeper?). Suzaku's dub voice surprised me with how appropriate it was too. One of the things I really wish we could replicate in English though, is the subtle differences in manners between characters, between Lelouch and Suzaku at various stages of their lives, and between Lelouch and Zero. In Japanese, when Lelouch and Suzaku are children, they refer to themselves with "boku" and "ore" respectively. As teenagers, the pronouns are swapped, with Lelouch using "ore" (Zero uses "watashi") and Suzaku using "boku." Euphemia uses "watakushi." I'll skip the grammar lesson (go wiki "Japanese pronouns"), but suffice to say that these differences provide a lot of very interesting insight into each of the characters. It's really too bad English isn't nearly as interesting.
The rest of the voices in the dub are pretty average, perhaps the low end of average, with a stereotypically high-pitched girly voice for Nunnally that is amazingly annoying, and very forgettable voices for virtually all the female characters (Milly, Shirley, and Kallen all kind of sound the same). I was very impressed with Lloyd's dub voice though, even if nothing will ever amount to his amazing original voice, which is uh, amazing! Seriously. One of the most amusing voices I've ever heard. Jun Fukuyama's voice for Lelouch I found to be a bit too deep/old sounding initially, but that grew on me as well, and I really love the badassity of his voice for Zero. Suzaku's original voice sounds a little generic at first, but it grows with his character. There's a good bit of Engrish in the Japanese version as well, which is always fun. I don't think you can ever get tired of their "Yes, my lord(o)!" or their "All hail Britannia!"
Overall, I'd say the original is damn awesome, and the dub is pretty watchable -- always a plus, right?
OVERALL - I really love this series, and I definitely did not see that happening. Honestly, I found the first episode incredibly underwhelming: the opening sequence made it look like a series I wouldn't be interested in watching at all, and all of the expository really turned me off...but the second episode? That was so much more epic than I could have ever predicted, and I was pretty much won over after that. I'm just a sucker for chess analogies, I guess! Seriously though, good story, good characters, good animation, and good music! Mechas, politics, rivalry and comradery, strained friendships, love and hate, complex ideologies, and blowing shit up! What more could you want? :D

Akame Tsubaki
Alrighty, back for another week and giving you another review. I hope everyone's had a good week since the last review. Everyone who had a stressful week, I hope this one starts off better.
(REMINDER: I AM ONLY CRITIQUING THE OC AND HAVE NOTHING PERSONAL AGAINST THE CREATOR OF THE OC. THIS IS NOT A ATTACK TO THE ARTIST OR ANYTHING OF THE SORT. THIS CRITIQUE IS MY PERSONAL OPINIONS AND I WOULD RESPECT YOUR OPINION IF YOU RESPECT MINE. THANK YOU!) -------------------- Today we will be critiquing the oh-so-popular Tsubaki Akame by the talented Tsurugami.deviantart.com Many people on Deviantart and Tumblr knows them vary well for having well drawn and well executed art with smooth shading and a wise color pallet that is distinct with every character they make. But enough about that, let's get to the critiquing.
Let's start off with Tsubaki's appearance. So far I'm liking the hair style. I'm a sucker for long bangs on the side of the face. I like the way her hair is pulled up in the back, it's not a bun though but I like it. I'm also loving the color of the hair, a nice burgundy color that fits so well with the style. Her eyes are a really pretty color of red as well, the only thing I personally don't like is the fact that she has red eyes and not a Uchiha. Her outfit is a simple yet elegant style and with the beautiful color choices. The Jacket is such a nice shade of dark Teal. It's not too loud or too quiet either. Her Obi on the waist is a nice mustard yellow, again, not to loud and not to quiet either. The long black skirt is really what is lovely about this OC. it flows really nicely with the body and makes her look a lot taller than what she might be. The skirt color is black, in my opinion was the right choice because she could have picked a different color and ruined the outfit color pallet completely. The color pallet could have gone terribly wrong if they were just a tad lighter or a tad darker. They chose their colors wisely from the hair to the top, sash, and skirt. They pulled this off vary well.
Lets get to Tsubaki's Story/Background. Reading this I'm actually vary disappointed. I honestly thought that it was going to be a good original background. It's not. So she was born to the Akame Shizuka and the successor of the Akame family. She's heir to the Kekke Genkai and growing up as a child she shows no sign of her Kekke Genkai to open Steel Release. One day she gets kidnapped by a organization that uses her as bait to lure he mother in. First off I don't like this at all, I'm getting a Kushina vibe from this, being kidnapped is in the top 3 OC Clichès. But you need to ask yourself the question, Why was she alone in the home in the first place at such a young age? Let's continue. The mother finally got baited and tried to save her daughter (Understandable as a parent and mother) The people abuse her mother in front of Tsubaki. Alright, this so far is a walking cliché. It's just bad. They beat her mother in front of her in order to provoke her into awakening her Kekke Genkai. They was their for days (I'm pretty sure if my wife and daughter were missing for more than a day I'm sending every Anbu Black Op on the spot) So after a couple of days of being tortured they finally drug the mother by giving her a drug that stops chakra flow and energy. Awhile after that during another torture session, one of the kidnappers kills Tsubaki's mother (Come on Leaf Village... really? Your the biggest village with the best Anbu system and it's taking you days to find a child and her mother??? I understand if you were a smaller village like Getsugakure or Hoshigakure than it wouldn't surprise me because of the fact that you are micro nations and don't have such a big economy and big resources but this is the Leaf Village) So after being strong for so long, Watching her mother die finally breaks Tsubaki. Watching her mother die finally brings out the Kekke Genkai within her and as a result she kills all the men in the room.(She's sooooo strong, her Kekke Genkai is soooo powerful. She totally just didn't have a normal way to unlock it. It had to have a tragic reason behind it. Original Recipe. 10/10 backstory. sloooow clap) (Note: Tsubaki is only 10 years old) After the rampage that's when the Anbu find her along with her Father (Wow, once the worst is over that's when the "hero's" come to save the day. a little too late if you ask me). After this her Father starts to spend a lot of time with Tsubaki (Which he would of been in the first place. If he did her mother wouldn't be dead) Helping her controller her steel release and helping her get through situations that occur when kidnapped. 6 months of treatment and she recovers from her trauma (I'm sorry but their is no way that 6 months can cure a child of the age of 10. People who go through trauma don't recover that fast. It takes years for a event like that to leave the mind. At the age of 10 when trauma happens and it involves the death of a loved one all you can think about is the past and how you enjoyed your time with them and now you need to cope with the fact that you will never see them again. It will always ring in your head the memories you shared with that person. All you can think about is the last time you see that person and it replays over and over in your head constantly. It normally takes a 10 year old who has gone through mental trauma to cope and move on from it by the age of 45 - 50 years and when getting professional help it takes 30 - 40 years. 6 months is impossible for anyone at any age to get over a traumatic experience)
Now let's get to the relationship. Tsubaki has a vary close relationship with her father after her mother's death. Later in life she gets married to Ao Tanuma and has two children, A young daughter and a older son (I currently cannot find her children's names) I've said this once before, I love OCxOC. It's great because you don't need to worry a about "Will this person draw my OC with -insert artists favorite Naruto Character- because their OC is shipped with them already?" it's really great honesty and it keeps things fresh and clean and open for so many ideas. Plus when adding your character to the story you don't have any conflict of "How my OC and this Cannon character had a chance to spend time together, when plot"
Let's continue and go to her personality. Her personality is really good. I love how she's strives for perfection and in doing so keeps a level head. She's tough on the outside and soft of the inside. She doesn't like to keep or be kept waiting. She's Calm and collected and has discipline. She's cautious as well, which is another good personality trait that works well with her backstory.
Let's get to her Jutsu and Abilities. She has a lot of abilities that look and sound original, clean, and well thought through. I'll only name 3 because she has a lot. Steel Release: Dokubari (Poison Needle), Lightning Style: Kaminari Shibari (Thunder Binding), and Hidden: Akai Mikazuki (Red Crescent Moon). I love the sound of all of those techniques. Her weapon of choice is a Kase-gatana (Umbrella Sword). In the description it's said to not be made from paper, as it appears to be but it's made from metal. This is supporting her Kekke Genkai. Vary good and vary well said and though through
ALRIGHTY! We have reached the end of this critique. I must say I enjoyed this OC a lot. And I hope to may do many more of Tsurugami's OC in the future. But let's get to finished rating.
Appearance: 9.6/10 History/Background: 2.4/10 Relationships: 9.9/10 Personality: 8/10 Chakra/Abilities/Jutsu: 9.9/10
Well done OC. Can use a lot of major work on the backstory but besides the backstory it's a amazing, elegant, and tasteful OC with a lot to look forward to
